A week or so ago, I posted on the Flyhippie facebook page a little ditty about homeschooling. Here's why.
I homeschooled all my kids. They graduated from home. I've taught my kids, other people's kids, classes of kids and classes of kids that didn't even include my own kids. My existence when my kids were school age was them 100 percent. I was really lucky to be able to do that. However; now that it's standard for most of you, I'm going to try and help you out.
Because when you aren't expecting it, it can be tough. If you breathe and have realistic goals, it's the best time you'll have with your kids.
There is a photo of what I posted on facebook, but let me add some things.
Yes, your kids are sifting through their assignments. Depending on your child, they're either going to LOVE this or HATE this. If they hate it....take what they're learning and make it fun. Realize, you are schooling at home under the worst scenario. You can't LEAVE. This isn't normal for a homeschool family, so know that. We did ALL THE THINGS. Which means,
Since you cannot, then you need to take full advantage of all of the museums that are offering free tours on the internet. Take the virtual field trips and incorporate them with the assignments. Go to an art museum online and write a paper about the story behind your favorite piece of art. Either look it up and write a factual story, or make a creative one. Use these in your history lessons, too. Use all of the incredibly interesting things that are now at your disposal.
Do work outside.
Get some sunshine. Take breaks. If you get frustrated, so is your kid....so take a break.
Don't make it be hell and don't make it take all day. If it takes all day, make sure there is interest and laughter.
Education isn't a punishment. Make sure you are inspiring your child to WANT to learn.

Read through the copy of the facebook post because it's accurate.
If you have questions, please comment them. I'll answer from a perspective of having taught for years and every age. I'm still homeschooling even though my kids have graduated. I now have foster kids that have too much trauma to enter a public school so I'm STILL homeschooling! So please know, I've schooled under many circumstances. I've worked and schooled. I've only homeschooled. I've taught a teen while I had four kids under four all day (and two full time) and while my husband was very ill with kidney failure and going through dialysis. (no joke. THAT was a YEAR).... Now, I've got five foster kids and a photography studio...
You can do this.
It will feel like you can't and when you feel that....go make a snack. But double the recipe. And make your kid add up those fractions. Because this is how we school. We make it fun. Make memories. The education will come.
TRUST ME.
